The didactic work Thirikadugam (திரிகடுகம்) we dealt last time contained three precepts in every poem. The one we discuss this week Nānmanikkadigai (நான்மணிக்கடிகை) has four gems or instructions for the common man in each one of the 104 poems. The word “மணி” here means ‘gem’ and “கடிகை” meaning piece or ornament.

As usual, we see lot of similarities between Nānmanikkadigai and Thirukkural. This is not unique to Nānmanikkadigai alone, but with all didactic works under 18 minor works in Tamil (பதினென்கீழ்கணக்கு நூல்கள்). Nānmanikkadigai is a highly rated work and in terms of popularity and poetic works, and it occupies a position next only to Thirukkural and Nalatiyaar. The work is a composition by Vilampi Naaganaar (விளம்பி நாகனார்), a Vaishnavite by faith.

Nānmanikkadigai has a peculiar style. We can attribute every quatrain to a particular set four thematic merit or demerit. There are usually not subject matters. A single poem may therefore cover four different subjects. These four could be parables or similes brought together from different walks of life, as the following example would indicate:

Musk deer

கள்ளி வயிற்றின் அகில்பிறக்கும்; மான்வயிற்றின்
ஒள்ளரி தாரம் பிறக்கும்; பெருங்கடலுள்
பல்விலைய முத்தம் பிறக்கும் ;அறிவார்யார்
நல்லாள் பிறக்குங் குடி.   (4)    

A latex laden plant can yield fragrant wood;
Musk originates from the gland of the deer;
Precious pearls come from the waste sea;
We can’t predict where the wise will be born.

(1) Yards of measure four

மண்ணி யறிப மணிநலம்; பண்ணமைத்து
ஏறிய பின்னறிப மாநலம்; மாசறச்
சுட்டறிப பொன்னின் நலங்காண்பார்; கெட்டறிப
கேளிரான் ஆய பயன்.(3)

The worth of precious stone is judged by polishing it;
The breed of a horse by mounting the saddle;
The value of gold is seen while calcining it;
Likewise, the worth of relatives in times of crisis.

Relevant Thirukkural:
கேட்டினும் உண்டோ ர் உறுதி கிளைஞரை
நீட்டி அளப்பதோர் கோல்.   (796)
Is there any yardstick better than adversity,
To spread out and measure friends?

(2) Sleepless four

கள்வம்என் பார்க்கு துயில் இல்லை, காதலிமாட்டு
உள்ளம்வைப்பார்க்கும் துயில் இல்லை, ஒண்பொருள்
செய்வம்என் பார்க்கும் துயில் இல்லை, அப்பொருள்
காப்பார்க்கும் இல்லை துயில். (7)

Thieves spend sleepless nights thinking about stealing;
The lovesick are sleepless longing for their sweethearts;
Those who hank after wealth also spend sleepless nights;
So also those who keep guard of such wealth.

Relevant Thirukkural:
அன்பொரீஇத் தற்செற்று அறநோக்காது ஈட்டிய
ஒண்பொருள் கொள்வார் பிறர்.    (1009)
Strangers shall possess that wealth amassed Without love, comfort or scruples. (PS)

(3) Precious things four

கண்ணிற் சிறந்த உறுப்பில்லை; கொண்டானின்
துன்னிய கேளிர் பிறரில்லை; மக்களின்
ஒண்மையவாய்ச் சான்ற பொருளில்லை; ஈன்றாளோ
டெண்ணக் கடவுளு மில். (55)

No organ is more precious than the eyes;
No one is more intimate to a wife than her husband;
No fortune is greater to parents than begetting good children;
No deity is appropriate than one’s mother.

Relevant Thirukkural:
மங்கலம் என்ப மனைமாட்சி மற்று அதன்
நன்கலம் நன்மக்கட் பேறு.   (60)
A good wife is called boon to a house;
Besides that, good children its jewels.

(4) Uncontrollable four

பட்டாங்கே பட்டொழுகும் பண்புடையாள்; காப்பினும்
பெட்டாங் கொழுகும் பிணையிலி - முட்டினும்
சென்றாங்கே சென்றொழுகும் காமம்; கரப்பினும்
கொன்றான்மேல் நிற்குங் கொலை.  (90)

A virtuous wife remains chaste even if unrestrained;
An unfaithful wife will go astray even if controlled;
Lust takes its natural course even if blocked by hurdles;
The crime will stick even if the murderer attempts to hide it.

Thirukkural for the first two lines:
பெண்ணின் பெருந்தக்க யாவுள கற்பென்னும்
திண்மைஉண் டாகப் பெறின்.   (54)
What more grandeur does a woman need
Than possessing the strength of chastity?

5) Follies four

இளமைப் பருவத்துக் கல்லாமை குற்றம்;
வளமிலாப் போழ்தத்து வள்ளன்மை குற்றம்;
கிளைஞரில் போழ்திற் சினம்குற்றம்; குற்றம்
தமரல்லார் கையகத் தூண். (92)

It is a crime to waste youthful days without learning;
It is a folly to be benevolent when you are a pauper;
Folly it is to get angry with foes with no kin nearby.
Folly it is to take food from a hypocrite.

ஆற்றின் அறவறிந்து ஈக அதுபொருள்
போற்றி வழங்கு நெறி.  (477)
Know the limit and grant with measure.
This is the way to guard your treasure.
