Paripatal (பரிபாடல்)

Introduction: Literary classics abound in all languages of the word and it is indeed a pleasure to read them and appreciate how our ancestors viewed life and how every civilization differed from each other in viewing at the aims and pursuits of life in this world. The objective here is to present once a week, the best poem or sloka or verse or song I have read among the different literary works of the world. "யான் பெற்ற இன்பம் பெருக இவ்வையகம்" என்று திருமூலர் திருமந்திரத்தில் கூறியதுபோல, let everyone attain the bliss I have received in reading them.

இவ்வாரம் நாம் எடுத்துக்கொண்டிருக்கும் நூலான “பரிபாடல்” கீழ்கண்ட இரண்டு வகைகளில் மற்ற சங்க இலக்கியங்களிடமிருந்து மாறுபடுகிறது:

1.    முதலாவதாக, இராகத்தோடு (பண்) பாடப்பட்ட ஒரே சங்க நூல் பரிபாடல்தான்!

2.    இரண்டாவதாக, முற்றிலுமாக இறைபக்திப் பாடல்களைக்கொண்ட ஒரே சங்க நூலும் இதுதான். (சங்க இலக்கியங்கள் என்றாலே SECULAR POETRY என்ற கூக்குரலுக்கு பரிபாடலும் பத்துப்பாட்டில் ஒன்றான திருமுருகாற்றுப்படையும் ஒரு விதிவிலக்கு).

Naturally, Paripadal contains one of the oldest examples of religious poetry of the Tamil country. It won’t be an exaggeration to say that Paripaadal was a precursor to the Bakhti literature of the period 700-1200 AD. உரையாசிரியர்கள் எல்லோரும் 70 பாடல்கொண்ட நூலாக பரிபாடலைக் குறிப்பிட்டாலும், இன்று நமக்குக் கிடைத்திருப்பவை 22 முழு பாடல்களும், பின்னால் பல உரைகளிடையே கண்டுபிடிக்கப்பட்ட ஓரிரண்டு அரைகுறை பாடல்கள் மட்டுமே. Of the 22 full songs that we have now, six are on திருமால் (Vishnu), eight are on முருகன் and eight on வைகை.

கலித்தொகையப் போலவே, பரிபாடலும் மற்ற பெரும்பாலான சங்க இலக்கியங்களைப்போல இல்லாமல், சற்று காலத்தில் பின்பே உருவாகியிருக்கவேண்டும் என்பது இக்கால ஆய்வாளர் பலரின் கருத்து. இதை நான் தேர்ந்தெடுத்துள்ள கீழ்கண்ட பாடலிலிருந்தே தெரிந்துகொள்ளலாம். கலித்தொகையைப் போலவே, எளிதாக புரிந்துகொள்ளும்படி அமைந்துள்ளது இதிலுள்ள சொல்லடைவு: 

தீயினுள் தெறல் நீ; பூவினுள் நாற்றம் நீ;
கல்லினுள் மணியும் நீ; சொல்லினுள் வாய்மை நீ;
அறத்தினுள் அன்பு நீ; மறத்தினுள் மைந்து நீ;
வேதத்து மறை நீ; பூதத்து முதலும் நீ;
வெஞ் சுடர் ஒளியும் நீ; திங்களுள் அளியும் நீ;
அனைத்தும் நீ; அனைத்தின் உட்பொருளும் நீ;

You are the heat within the fire;

            Fragrance within the flower;

            Gem within the stone;

            Truth within the word;

            Mercy within justice;

            Might behind valour;

            Secret within the scripture;

            Foremost among elements;

            Splendour in the sun;

            Coolness in the moon;

Everything, You are everything;

            The sense, the substance, of everything.

(கடுவன் இளவெயினனார், பரிபாடல் 3:  63-68)

This song on the attributes of Vishnu, reminds us very much like the slokas by Krishna we find in Chapter X of Bhagavad Gita:

I am the radiant sun among the luminaries,
I am the moon among the stars.

22. 
I am the Sama Veda among the Vedas;
I am the consciousness in living beings.

23. 
I am the fire among the Vasus;
And I am Meru among the mountain peaks.

24. 
Among the priests, O Arjuna,
I am the ocean among the bodies of water.

25. 
I am the monosyllable OM among the words;
I am Japa among the Yajna;
……………

39.
I am the origin or seed of all beings, O Arjuna.
There is nothing, animate or inanimate,
That can exist without Me.
